Agenda

Activities get everyone involved and help people put some of their knowledge into practice.

Some suggested activities are listed below, with links to further information and resources for each.

Activity 1: Our Values

This warm-up activity aims to get people thinking and talking about alcohol-related issues and to highlight the different attitudes and values people have about alcohol.

Activity 2: Startling Statistics

This warm up activity aims to get people mixing and talking, while also providing important facts. People are interested in facts and stats and their perception of the facts (particularly about young people's drinking) is often wrong.

Activity 3: The Drug Knowledge Quiz

The Drug Knowledge Quiz tests participants’ beliefs about how much they know about drugs.

Activity 4: Group Discussion

After learning a bit more about alcohol issues and youth drinking statistics, a group discussion can allow participants to talk about what they have learnt and hear other people's points of view.

Activity 5: Class Act

This activity provides a quick but effective visual picture of what youth alcohol statistics look like when applied to an average class of Year 9 or Year 10 students. The activity is meant to illustrate quickly the range of drinking behaviours within a class.

Activity 6: Why Adults Drink

This activity opens up discussion and makes comparisons between why young people and adults drink, often concluding that young people drink in the same way that adults do and mostly for the same reasons.

Activity 7: Danger Ranking
This activity involves asking participants to rank situations involving alcohol from the least to the most dangerous.

Activity 8: Parent/Student Role Play

A role play where students and parents act out different roles can raise issues such as: breaching trust, communication, telling the truth, different expectations of sons and daughters, damage to property and dealing with conflict.  You do not need to have parents playing parents, young people playing young people - in fact it can be more interesting if you have parents playing the teenage children, and vice versa!

Activity 9: Scenarios

In this activity, groups discuss individual reactions to certain situations such as how a parent reacts when a student comes home drunk.

5 Safe Party Tips
  1. Restrict your party to 'invitation only'
  2. Keep emergency numbers and a first aid kit handy
  3. Have non-alcoholic options available
  4. Think about how you will monitor alcohol intake and how much alcohol you will serve - what sort of supervision will there be?
  5. Consider how your guests will get home - will there be designated drivers?
